Music from the Left Coast

The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthews

The original version of 'Waloyo Yamoni' was commissioned by the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthews, based in the Pacific Palisades, CA. The piece was originally titled 'Beber', and the original scoring was for string orchestra with two percussion, accompanying two soloists and a chorus. When the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthews first approached Christopher Tin to make a recording of his piece, they wanted to make sure that the vocals were performed as authentically as possible, so when Christopher mentioned that he was soon headed to Johannesburg to record the Soweto Gospel Choir for another project, he and the Music Director of the orchestra, Tom Neenan, decided to split the cost of recording the GRAMMY-winning choir, and to use their vocals on both Music of the Left Coast as well as Christopher's own album The Drop That Contained the Sea.
