The collaboration between Christopher Tin and Yuma Kagiyama came about after Christopher noticed a number of prominent figure skaters competing to his music. Excited, he started tweeting about it; and got a message from Olympic medalist Carolina Kostner, who explained to him that hall-of-fame choreographer Lori Nichol had become a fan of his music. Then at the beginning of the 2025-2026 season, Lori Nichol explained to Christopher that she knew of his completion of Turandot, and was interested to see if it might be a fit for Yuma Kagiyama's free skate routine at the Winter Olympic Games 2026 in Milano-Cortina. After hearing the music, Lori knew that it might make the perfect musical accompaniment for Yuma's Olympic routine, which was set to take place on the 100th-anniversary of the premiere of Turandot, in the same city where the opera first premiered. For a detailed look at how the collaboration unfolded, watch this interview between Christopher Tin, Lori Nichol, and Carolina Kostner.Winter Olympic Games 2026
The story of Christopher's collaboration with Yuma Kagiyama was widely celebrated by press and the figure skating community alike. Robert Samuels of The Washington Post wrote: "Although Kagiyama’s program is not as difficult as Malinin’s, his free skate has the potential to be the signature program of these Olympics. It is custom‑made for him — a collaboration between his choreographer and composer Christopher Tin. They crafted a sonically riveting orchestration of the end of Puccini’s Turandot. The epic arrangement, complete with a choral ensemble and soloist, matches Kagiyama’s sense of drama and beauty. A sound so big would overwhelm most any other skater." Agnieszka Flak of Reuters wrote "Kagiyama’s programme has drawn attention both for its timing — coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Turandot’s premiere at the La Scala opera house in Milan — and for its sweeping operatic arrangement, and is bound to resonate strongly with a home crowd steeped in the opera's history."Christopher's First Opera Commission
"Turandot: Christopher Tin Finale" is Christopher's bold debut in the opera world: a completion of the most famous unfinished work in the opera canon, Giacomo Puccini's Turandot. The original commission came from Washington National Opera, who premiered the work at the Kennedy Center in May of 2024. With a libretto by Susan Soon He Stanton (best known as the writer/producer of HBO's Succession), the Tin/Stanton ending is an attempt to create a more plausible conclusion to a problem that vexed Puccini to his deathbed: how to make the audience believe that the two main characters, Turandot and Calàf, could fall in love by the final curtain.Special Recording Process
The special edit for Yuma Kagiyama's routine required extra recordings to be made by the primary artists of the "Turandot: Christopher Tin Finale" recording. Soprano Christine Goerke, tenor Clay Hilley, the English National Opera Chorus and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra all re-recorded various passages of the opera ending to fit the timing of Yuma's routine. Then a special mix was made by Grammy-winning engineer Rich Breen, who compressed the dynamics, removed reverb, and collapsed the stereo field to mono, so that Kagiyama could hear the music consistently no matter where he was in the skating rink.
